Heart Failure Care | Heart Care Clinic | North Kansas City Hospital
Brandon Louis was diagnosed with cancer at age 20. Intense radiation treatment cured the cancer but damaged Brandon’s heart valves. After a heart attack followed by open heart surgery a few years later to unblock an artery, Brandon was diagnosed with heart failure. His cardiologist recommended the Heart Care Clinic at North Kansas City Hospital, where Brandon receives ongoing support and education that help him continue working, enjoying Kansas City Royals baseball and living life.

0.21 -> My name is Brandon Louis. I'm 47 years old.
6.109 -> I had cancer when I was 20 years old, and
it was in the lymph nodes. I did 13 weeks
12.9 -> of extensive radiation. The radiation had
damaged the heart valves. Back in 2009 is
19.71 -> when I had my first heart attack. And I
started traveling in 2012 and all of a
32.189 -> sudden the shortness of breath started
coming back and wasn't feeling so good.
41.36 -> Heart failure is a common end condition
for a lot of different heart-related
48.059 -> problems. Often times they've had a heart
attack or a heart valve problem that
53.85 -> would require an operation. Our clinic is
actually a collection of people with
63.87 -> different areas of expertise that have
been brought together with the purpose
68.46 -> or goal of taking care of heart failure
patients; patients with a diagnosis of
73.08 -> congestive heart failure. The Heart
Clinic has helped me contain my weight
79.189 -> and make sure I'm on diet. If I don't go,
I will stray off my diet. Our goal is to
89.64 -> provide a better level of care, and we
found that the best way to do that was
95.04 -> with frequent outpatient visits. The best
way to do that was to provide dedicated
100.939 -> personnel, nurses, pharmacy, dietitians,
social work, home health and allow those
107.759 -> patients have access to those people
basically on an as-needed basis. We have
113.85 -> found a high level of success in this
approach in that the result of the
118.95 -> readmission rate, the amount of
times a patient has to come back to the
122.369 -> hospital, to have their heart failure
treated in the hospital has gone down
126.27 -> significantly as a result
130.849 -> I've been out of the hospital now for
almost a year and a half. Well, the short
137.159 -> term is to stay out of the hospital
because I was a frequent visitor. I mean,
141.81 -> I was probably going every two months.
Long-term goal is to make it to
148.79 -> retirement.
155.83 ->
