Treat High Blood Pressure's Root Cause by having a Complete Cardiac Examination

Treat High Blood Pressure's Root Cause by having a Complete Cardiac Examination

There is an epidemic of high blood pressure (hypertension) happening, and it’s the one thing you want to control because it can cause heart attacks, strokes, plaque build-up in the arteries (atherosclerosis), among other ailments. Treating high blood pressure’s root cause, metabolic syndrome, is key to lowering it and having a complete cardiac examination. So in this video, I will explain why the workup of high blood pressure in most patients is incomplete.

8.508 -> Hi again, it's Dr. Jamnadas from cardiovascular interventions.
11.578 -> And today we are going to cover a very important topic,
13.947 -> which is high blood pressure.
15.315 -> And it's important because there's an epidemic of high blood pressure going on.
16.449 -> And it's important because there's an epidemic of high blood pressure going on.
19.119 -> And there's a lot of misunderstanding about what high blood pressure is.
21.855 -> And yet,
22.756 -> if there's one thing that you want to really control its high blood pressure,
25.692 -> because it can cause heart attacks, atherosclerosis, strokes,
29.929 -> blindness, proof of acid disease, kidney failure.
33.166 -> So high blood pressure is very important and it's totally misunderstood.
36.469 -> So as a cardiologist, I see patients with high blood pressure,
39.806 -> but they really have end organ damage.
41.274 -> So today I want to tell you what the incomplete workup of high blood pressure
44.711 -> is. Traditionally. When patients come to see us for high blood pressure,
48.348 -> we say that all 95% of them are primary essential hypertension.
52.986 -> Well, over the years, I've realized there's nothing.
55.355 -> Essential about high blood pressure.
57.49 -> You don't have to have it. And the 5%.
60.226 -> Have a secondary cause such as kidney failure or some sort of a tumor in the
64.631 -> body. But majority.
66.366 -> Of them don't seem to have a cause for it.
69.069 -> And therefore,
70.07 -> the next thing is we take out the prescription pad and we give you blood
73.306 -> pressure medications, and that's right.
75.175 -> We do want to get the blood pressure down and you do want to get on a
77.744 -> medications now early, before you start developing end organ damage,
82.248 -> but the incomplete examination,
84.217 -> I want you to think about the things that I'm going to tell you next over the
88.154 -> years, I've realized that many,
90.924 -> many patients actually can reverse their high blood pressure.
93.76 -> Unlike what I was taught in medical school,
96.83 -> that essential hypertension is just essential.
99.432 -> So the number one thing I've realized is that
103.603 -> metabolic syndrome causes high blood pressure.
107.574 -> If you reverse metabolic syndrome.
110.243 -> High blood pressure goes away.
112.045 -> What is metabolic syndrome?
113.613 -> Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of high blood pressure.
117.383 -> You have a low HDL, a high triglyceride.
121.588 -> You're overweight. Your body mass index is over 25.
123.022 -> You're overweight. Your body mass index is over 25.
125.525 -> And particularly most of the mass is around the belly.
128.428 -> And if you look around a lot.
129.963 -> Of people with this condition. Look right now,
133.266 -> more than 50% of our population is weight, frankly, obese.
137.971 -> it is a symptom of metabolic disease. Now,
141.741 -> not all obese patients or overweight patients have metabolic.
145.578 -> Syndrome. We know that. 80%.
148.648 -> Of the patients who are overweight have metabolic syndrome.
152.485 -> But being overweight is only a symptom.
155.722 -> Of metabolic syndrome because they are 20% of the patients who actually have
159.826 -> metabolic syndrome, but they're actually not overweight.
162.795 -> And we call them tofus thin on the outside, but fat on the inside,
166.766 -> they have a metabolic condition in their body that is actually causing them to
171.638 -> have high blood pressure, liquid abnormalities, fatty liver,
176.242 -> high insulin levels. So this metabolic condition,
180.68 -> this underlying metabolic syndrome can cause obesity.
185.185 -> Cause when you have high insulin levels, you're going to get obesity.
187.921 -> So how, how is high blood.
190.523 -> Pressure happening in patients with metabolic syndrome?
193.66 -> Whether they will be so not right what's happening is that it's the insulin
198.198 -> insulin really paralyzes the arteries and the arterials.
202.368 -> So they don't appropriately basal dilate.
205.471 -> So when you have high insulin levels due to a condition called insulin
208.975 -> resistance, which is part of metabolic syndrome and the problem with,
212.845 -> with your metabolism, you get high blood pressure.
216.182 -> And over the last 10 years.
218.451 -> That I've been actually treating metabolic syndrome aggressively in my office
222.155 -> here. And we've reversed metabolic syndrome through a diet,
225.458 -> exercise and weight loss and changing to non-processed
230.163 -> non refined foods, nothing artificial.
233.166 -> I'm finding that the metabolic condition gets better.
236.803 -> Blood pressure gets better and the weight automatically comes down.
241.04 -> Now when the weight comes down, it's not because of caloric restriction.
245.011 -> It's because the metabolic syndrome and the high.
248.314 -> Insulin levels and all the other hormonal imbalances are getting better.
252.685 -> And when your insulin load comes down, your weight comes down.
255.822 -> So it's losing weight is not all about
260.326 -> calories. The calorie theory is totally debunked.
264.897 -> It's not the calories in calories.
266.733 -> Out and you know, eat less and exercise more.
270.069 -> That that's all out of the window.
272.272 -> And we know that that's been debunked for years, but yet most.
275.708 -> People unfortunately still go by that paradigm,
280.213 -> which is a totally wrong paradigm it's the hormonal
284.183 -> imbalances that are causing metabolic syndrome and causing your high blood
288.087 -> pressure.
289.188 -> So if you have high blood pressure, you can't just stop.
292.025 -> At saying, okay, I'm going to take these pills now. No,
294.46 -> you need to make sure you don't have metabolic syndrome.
297.397 -> You need to make sure you don't have sleep apnea,
299.532 -> which goes along with of course being obese,
301.367 -> but sometimes non obese patients can also have sleep apnea.
304.604 -> You want to make sure of course there's no kidney problems and any congenital
307.44 -> problems that you may have. And other causes,
309.976 -> there are some very rare causes of hypertension too.
312.211 -> But a complete workup includes.
314.414 -> Your metabolic work up.
317.05 -> So unless you know, your insulin levels,
321.12 -> they should really know your inflammatory markers in your body.
323.556 -> Your triglyceride and your HDL and the ratio of triglyceride to
327.76 -> HDL. Unless you know these in your, in your blood tests,
331.998 -> you're not going to know what's driving your high blood pressure.
336.436 -> So.
337.57 -> I've taken hundreds of patients of antihypertensive therapy
342.175 -> by addressing metabolic syndrome. How do we address it? How do we treat it?
346.512 -> It's through diet, mostly it's through diet and lifestyle changes.
350.483 -> So it's eating non-processed foods, non refined products, no artificial,
355.254 -> nothing that's processed and eating whole foods only.
360.493 -> And then the second part of it is I do intermittent fasting and time restricted
364.53 -> feeding in the office because that restores insulin sensitivity.
367.6 -> And there's some videos which are
369.302 -> Already linked to this one on how to.
372.338 -> Reverse diabetes and insulin resistance through diet and intermittent fasting.
376.476 -> So you can look at those,
377.777 -> but that is one of the most powerful things you can do to restore insulin
382.348 -> sensitivity. When insulin sensitivity comes back again,
384.784 -> your insulin levels come down as insulin levels down,
388.388 -> your blood pressure gets better as well. So yeah,
391.19 -> I hope that you found this very helpful because hypertension is not the end of
394.193 -> the road.
394.627 -> It means you now have the real work of finding out why you have high blood
399.132 -> pressure and how you can reverse it. So if you like this,
401.567 -> please hit the like button and sign up for this channel because I'm going to
405.138 -> come up with some more videos that are going to be helpful for you in your
408.808 -> everyday life everyday, work up and stay healthy, take care.
