Hybrid Coronary Revascularization for Coronary Artery Disease
Hybrid Coronary Revascularization for Coronary Artery Disease
Emory is one of the few centers in the country offering a unique procedure called hybrid coronary revascularization. The new treatment option for coronary artery disease, hybrid revascularization is a combination of coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

4.259 -> I joined the gym and I was doing aerobic exercise
on a treadmill.
8.61 -> I started noticing discomfort in my chest.
11.11 -> I started getting some pain go up into my
throat and on a few occasions I had pain radiating
16.199 -> down my left arm.
17.83 -> I went down to my primary care physician and
told him about the symptoms.
22.01 -> He made an appointment with the cardiology
services at Emory Midtown.
26 -> My name is Dr. Michael Halkos.
27.72 -> I am a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Emory
Heart and Vascular Center.
30.89 -> I currently practice adult cardiac surgery.
34.01 -> My primary focus is on minimally invasive
cardiac surgery including minimally invasive
38.681 -> coronary bypass surgery.
40.219 -> A typical patient that is referred for a hybrid
coronary revascularization procedure is a
46.571 -> patient that has a blockage in the artery
in front of the heart called the left anterior
50.89 -> descending artery.
52.46 -> Plus, at least one other blood vessel that
has disease in it.
56.829 -> When I first met Dr. Halkos, at that time
he had done over 100 robotic bypass surgeries.
63.239 -> I was pretty impressed with that.
65.19 -> His manner was just very very friendly.
68.25 -> He sat down, looks you in the eye - very empathetic.
72.26 -> He knows you don't want to be here and he
knows that the road we're about to take together
76 -> is kind of treacherous.
77.33 -> But he also comes across as very knowledgeable.
81.21 -> Historically patients with multi-vessel coronary
disease are treated with stents or they were
86.99 -> treated with surgery.
90 -> Hybrid revascularization is the best of both
worlds strategy.
93.56 -> We are combining the durability of surgery
with the minimally invasiveness of stenting.
100.41 -> We are trying to provide an optimal therapy
with a minimally invasive approach.
105.69 -> I did not know what to expect.
108 -> This was the first hospitalization that I
had in my life.
111.03 -> The people that I interacted with were wonderful.
113.85 -> They were'nt just going through motions.
116.39 -> I was their focus.
117.92 -> The advantages of hybrid revascularization
are that we provide a minimally invasive option
124.14 -> to provide complete revascularization for
patients with coronary disease.
128.47 -> That means that all blocked arteries are treated
either with a bypass or with a stent.
134.349 -> That translates into a shorter recovery time,
a quicker return to work, and potentially
140.01 -> fewer complications after the procedure.
143.061 -> Now I am doing great.
144.061 -> I am back to full exercise.
145.73 -> I walk in the neighborhood with my wife and
then actually, this past sunday, a friend
150.189 -> of mine and I walked up to the top of Stone
Mountain.
152.65 -> And that was a good experience.
155.279 -> The Emory Heart and Vascular Center is one
of the few centers in the Southeast thats
158.849 -> offering a hybrid revascularization strategy.
162.59 -> Collaboration between cardiologists and cardiac
surgeons is crucial.
166.599 -> We sit down together and review findings and
try to determine the best treatment and option.
172.11 -> That's done on a daily basis.
173.51 -> I know that Emory is all about customer service
and patient family centered care.
178.4 -> But, to talk it and teach is very very different
from experiencing it.
185.38 -> The experience was pretty wonderful.
