Dementia Risk and Hypertension

Dementia Risk and Hypertension

High blood pressure can lead to an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage. But did you know that high blood pressure can also harm your brain? Middle aged people with high blood pressure have a much greater risk of getting dementia.

This project, funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, will help educate you on ways to reduce your own risk for dementia no matter your age.

Production of this project has been made possible through a financial contribution from the Public Health Agency of Canada. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of the Public Health Agency of Canada.

.52 -> Hello there!
-> In today's video we will be exploring hypertension,
.909 -> how it is related to dementia,
.149 -> and the ways hypertension
.5 -> can be prevented.
.54 -> This video is part of a series
.169 -> on how to identify and reduce
.151 -> risk factors for dementia.
.4 -> Dementia is a general term for loss of memory
.9 -> language, problem-solving,
.502 -> and other thinking abilities
.081 -> that are severe enough to interfere
.838 -> with daily life.
.14 -> Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia
.736 -> are two of the most common types of dementia.
.59 -> What is hypertension?
.77 -> Hypertension is commonly referred to as
.839 -> high blood pressure.
.45 -> When your heart beats and the blood circulates
.456 -> around your body,
.959 -> pressure is created in your veins and arteries.
.95 -> Too much, or too little blood pressure is bad,
.14 -> but for most people,
.528 -> high blood pressure is more likely
.559 -> to be a problem.
.45 -> High blood pressure
.446 -> can lead to an increased risk of stroke,
.9 -> heart attack, and kidney damage.
.67 -> But did you know that high blood pressure
.527 -> can also harm your brain?
.33 -> Middle aged people with high blood pressure
.32 -> have a much greater risk
.756 -> of getting dementia.
.82 -> When taking your blood pressure,
.41 -> there will be two different readings.
.9 -> The first or "top" number
.464 -> on the blood pressure reading
.721 -> is your systolic blood pressure.
.77 -> The second number
.67 -> is your diastolic blood pressure
.586 -> which is the "bottom" number
.768 -> on the blood pressure reading.
.64 -> A blood pressure reading is
.892 -> considered within the "normal" range
.15 -> if it has a reading below 120 over 80.
.103 -> A blood pressure reading that is considered "high"
.238 -> will be anything above 130 over 80.
.62 -> It is normal for blood pressure readings
.431 -> to vary from time to time.
-> Sometimes you might have a higher
.564 -> or lower blood pressure
.756 -> than what is considered normal.
.36 -> Therefore, it is good to measure
.289 -> your blood pressure regularly
.96 -> so you can observe patterns
.51 -> in your blood pressure readings.
.77 -> If your blood pressure reading is
.157 -> consistently high or low,
.053 -> you should consult with a doctor
.362 -> to make sure everything is okay.
.01 -> It is important to test your blood pressure
.12 -> because there are often no signs
.849 -> or symptoms of high blood pressure.
.45 -> This means that you can have
.366 -> high blood pressure without knowing it.
.39 -> If you have never tested your blood pressure
.166 -> before, or want to start doing it more regularly,
.66 -> here are some ways you can start.
.34 -> The next time you visit your doctor,
.924 -> you can ask to have your blood pressure taken.
.51 -> You can also buy a doctor recommended
.439 -> blood pressure cuff machine
.887 -> so you can take your blood pressure
.024 -> in the convenience of your own home.
.27 -> Blood pressure monitors
.658 -> can also be used for free
.413 -> in many pharmacies.
.74 -> When you're taking your blood pressure,
.267 -> make sure that your feet
.588 -> are placed flat on the floor.
.18 -> It is also a good idea
.274 -> to measure your blood pressure at
.651 -> the same time every day
.003 -> to get consistent and reliable results.
.8 -> To keep track of your blood pressure,
.41 -> write your results with the date and time
.027 -> it was taken.
.15 -> Having a blood pressure log
.611 -> can be a great source of information
.433 -> to share at your next doctor's visit.
.96 -> Now you might be wondering:
.47 -> "How common is high blood pressure?"
.486 -> Blood pressure rates among those
.817 -> between the ages of 50 and 64:
.778 -> 21% of women and 27% of men
.757 -> have high blood pressure.
.46 -> As people get older,
.844 -> high blood pressure also becomes more common.
.72 -> By age 70, 69% of women
.746 -> and 71% of men
.855 -> have high blood pressure.
.59 -> So, how can high blood pressure
.699 -> increase your risk of dementia?
-> A good rule of thumb is
.132 -> what's good for your heart
.105 -> is good for your head.
.13 -> High blood pressure
.125 -> can contribute to stroke
.408 -> and heart disease
.651 -> which are diseases that can lead to
.452 -> vascular dementia.
.13 -> Vascular dementia
.327 -> occurs when blood vessels
.743 -> are damaged and the blood circulation
.049 -> is reduced,
.584 -> leading to an impaired supply of oxygen
.546 -> to the brain.
.95 -> Having high blood pressure
.334 -> during middle age puts people
.723 -> at a 60% greater risk of developing dementia,
.507 -> compared to those in middle age
.001 -> without high blood pressure.
.65 -> It is also important to measure
.385 -> the blood pressure of people
.669 -> living with dementia
.206 -> because high blood pressure
.467 -> will be harmful for them too.
.58 -> There are strategies that people can use
.39 -> to help them lower their high blood pressure.
-> For example,
.817 -> it is important to maintain a healthy weight.
.108 -> Being obese or overweight
.426 -> is a large risk factor for
.065 -> having high blood pressure.
.4 -> Please see our video on obesity
.938 -> for strategies to address weight loss.
.55 -> In addition, eat a healthy diet.
.71 -> Those who eat less than 5 servings of fruits
.028 -> and vegetables per day
.183 -> are more likely to have high blood pressure.
.25 -> Eating a healthy diet
.155 -> rich in whole grains and lean fish
.494 -> and meat is also helpful.
.89 -> Foods that have a lot of nutrients
.284 -> such as fibre, calcium, potassium, and magnesium
.954 -> have many health benefits
.664 -> including helping you maintain
.995 -> a healthy blood pressure.
.77 -> There are also a few things you should avoid eating.
.01 -> This includes saturated and trans-fat.
.32 -> Cut down on salt.
.204 -> Excess salt raises blood pressure.
.53 -> The recommended daily intake
.119 -> for those age 70 or older
.281 -> is less than 1,200 mg of salt per day
.36 -> but most older adults exceed these limits.
.104 -> Avoid processed foods
.171 -> as they tend to be very high
.681 -> in added salt.
.393 -> Exercise regularly.
.926 -> At least 30 minutes of exercise per day
.726 -> is recommended for lowering your blood pressure
.125 -> as well as helping prevent dementia.
-> Manage your diabetes.
.404 -> Diabetes can harm your blood vessels and
.717 -> increase your risk of developing
.772 -> high blood pressure.
.26 -> If you smoke,
.499 -> quitting can greatly reduce
.213 -> the risk of developing high blood pressure.
.36 -> Also, if you drink alcohol,
.916 -> try limiting your consumption
.104 -> as it can be beneficial to your health.
.42 -> Stress is also linked to high blood pressure.
.37 -> Learning how to manage stress
.73 -> through meditation and yoga
.104 -> can be helpful.
