0.6 -> [Music]
6.86 -> My name is Peter Panagos and I’m an emergency physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and currently
11.42 -> I’m associate professor of emergency medicine and neurology at
14.62 -> the Washington University School of Medicine.
16.79 -> I currently work in a very exciting environment, and a very chaotic environment, but there’s
20.46 -> a lot of organization where I work.
22.6 -> It may not seem it when you come in as a patient.
25.11 -> But I work in the emergency department of Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
28.1 -> And the emergency department is a very unique place in a health care setting.
31.869 -> It’s a place with specialized nurses and physicians of all different specialties and
36.94 -> ancillary service that involves labs and x-rays and pharmacy that are there 24/7 and 365 to
44.58 -> provide time critical care for the most severe and sickest patients in our community.
50.559 -> I think what everyone needs to understand or know for stroke is that it’s unlike a
55.03 -> lot of other conditions, where the symptoms and signs may overlap many other illnesses
60.1 -> that you may be familiar with.
61.89 -> Dizziness is very common, but can be stroke symptoms.
65.99 -> Headache is very common, but also can be the sign of a stroke.
69.01 -> But the classic signs of a stroke, things such as facial weakness, difficulties with speech,
75.34 -> inability to move your arm or leg, that come on fairly quickly, are things that
79.329 -> we want to recognize as stroke symptoms.
81.71 -> When you do have these symptoms, we want people to know that they should call 911.
85.68 -> Don’t call family members, don’t call friends.
88.159 -> But call 911 because 911 and EMS is trained to recognize stroke symptoms and bring you
94.34 -> to the right hospitals with the right treatment and time is of the essence.
97.89 -> What we like people to know is to recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke, which can
102.009 -> be very, very heterogeneous, but they can also be very, very common symptoms, which
108 -> we like to have people remember.
109.42 -> I like to use the pneumonic, F.A.S.T., which is Face, Arm, Speech and Time.
113.679 -> Face meaning any facial asymmetry or weakness.
117.579 -> Something doesn’t look normal, either by looking in the mirror or someone recognizes,
121.99 -> that could be the sign of a stroke.
124.02 -> As far as speech, if people have slurred speech, heavy speech, difficulty handling their words,
131.59 -> that would certainly be something that we would want to know.
135.04 -> Arm is part of the A, is part of F.A.S.T.
137.08 -> If you have difficulty raising your arm, using your arm or a clumsy hand.
140.95 -> And then time.
142.06 -> Time is of the essence.
143.06 -> We have a very narrow time window to treat stroke.
145.82 -> Call 911.
146.82 -> Don’t drive yourself in.
148.12 -> Don’t call your primary care physician to ask what to do.
150.75 -> So we like to say F.A.S.T.
152.06 -> Fast, Arm, Speech, Time.
153.74 -> Get into our hospital and we can run tests and do an evaluation to determine
158.44 -> if you are having a stroke.
160.35 -> And if you are, are you eligible for treatment, which may actually save your life and return
165.129 -> you to your capabilities or your status before you had your symptoms.
171.84 -> [Music]
