.78 -> - So about 18 young people between the ages
.17 -> of 18 and 45 have a stroke every day in Australia.
.1 -> - Unfortunately, stroke does not discriminate.
.559 -> It can happen to any of us at any time.
.3 -> - At the moment,
.68 -> services for people with stroke are really geared
.38 -> to the older stroke survivors
.12 -> so those in their 60s, 70s, and 80s.
.88 -> Young people really have very different needs.
.69 -> It's a different life stage.
.8 -> It's a different challenge
.111 -> for them to navigate through the rest of their lives.
.919 -> - It was made very clear to me that I was a very young,
.81 -> fit, healthy person
-> who had this unfortunate event out of nowhere.
.3 -> We couldn't make clues and connections
.86 -> as to as to why this happened to me.
.95 -> - We've been working
.92 -> for about six years to understand the unmet needs
.16 -> of younger people with stroke.
.93 -> - We know that the incidence is increasing
.539 -> for a number of known, but also unknown reasons.
.83 -> We want to make sure that misdiagnosis occurs less often,
.45 -> that the correct diagnostic workup is made.
.84 -> - We also want to set new standards
.31 -> for treatment pathways
.26 -> and for supporting young people
.12 -> through the many years after they've had a stroke.
.23 -> Our mission with the Young Stroke Service
.66 -> was to build a service with young people at the centre.
.58 -> Much of the things that they need around relationships,
.36 -> supports for cognitive and memory,
.54 -> around getting back to work or study
.87 -> are not well met in the current system.
.36 -> - We work with communication specialists to make sure
.66 -> that young stroke survivors with communication
.02 -> problems can access our services smoothly.
.84 -> We want to involve allied health teams.
.95 -> We want neuropsychologists, physiotherapists
.92 -> and occupational therapists,
.75 -> together with the Stroke Foundation,
.4 -> we are working with a group
.23 -> of young stroke survivors from diverse backgrounds.
.561 -> We've brought all these groups of people together.
.52 -> It's a really an interdisciplinary approach.
.97 -> - We'll be leaning heavily on technology to assist us
.39 -> to connect with young people,
.798 -> to stay connected with young people,
.179 -> and to navigate them through their treatment pathways
.92 -> and their recovery over the first three to five years
.77 -> after they've had a stroke.
.36 -> - If this service was made available to me,
.52 -> I would've felt more supported.
.68 -> I would've felt more validated.
.32 -> I would've felt like I had people in my corner.
.59 -> - This service is a pilot project.
.99 -> We're taking two different approaches in Victoria
.98 -> and South Australia just to see what model works best
.01 -> so that we can deliver a service that can work
.29 -> for all Australians.
.15 -> - If there's more awareness and more education,
.24 -> and this service will will do that.
.12 -> There's sort of this understanding that it is a possibility,
.75 -> that it can happen to somebody who is young.
.05 -> Then they can also get the immediate attention they need.
.57 -> They can also get the immediate resources
.34 -> they need so then they can get back
.77 -> to the life that they want going forward.
