-> a stroke survivor will probably be on at
.78 -> least two medicines after their stroke
.03 -> the first one will be at what's called
.509 -> an antiplatelet medicine which is
.27 -> prescribed to reduce the risk of a
.699 -> stroke happening due to blood clots and
.949 -> the main type that those medicines are
.529 -> has brain occupied a girl or an
.63 -> anticoagulant drug clips and warfarin
.189 -> and they will also be on a statin which
.11 -> is a clap drug used to reduce
.55 -> cholesterol but in strake patients it's
.149 -> found it's been found that it is
.59 -> beneficial even if the patient doesn't
.54 -> have a high cholesterol after stroke
.46 -> there's a whole range of medications
.32 -> that the stroke commission will start
.32 -> you on and it's important that you need
.809 -> hospital with a good understanding of
.37 -> what these different medications are I
.17 -> had medication for balance issues keep
.399 -> my blood pressure down you know simply
.27 -> staff didn't fall for cholesterol when I
.03 -> when I was in hospital I was given I was
.03 -> given about three or four lots of
.77 -> medication including aspirin but I wish
.979 -> taken just before I was discharged from
.07 -> the hospital I'm not on a lot of time
.08 -> but I think it one I think I'm on three
.119 -> tablets a day it did start off I was on
.97 -> nine tablets a day but as time has gone
.7 -> on and the the proved irrelevant or
.52 -> whatever then they would cool down to
.71 -> just three a day knowing that I had to
.079 -> be on long-term medication I found that
.119 -> very difficult to deal with mainly
.579 -> because the medication that I was on
.1 -> with all names that are remembered from
.649 -> what my dad took when my father was
.659 -> alive and I found it extremely
.47 -> overwhelming and also how I was going to
.829 -> pay for the medication I didn't know if
.78 -> I'd be entitled to free prescriptions a
.03 -> lot of research has looked at why
.95 -> patients have strokes and they found
.1 -> that if your blood is is thicker you're
.5 -> more like you have blood clots and you
.24 -> had blood clot in the brain you'll get a
.099 -> strip have a stroke
.289 -> so if you thin the blood you'll be left
.93 -> likely to have a blood clot if patients
.12 -> have a high blood pressure they are much
.129 -> more likely to develop the stroke or
.14 -> other forms of cardiovascular disease
.79 -> and the same goes for diabetes it's
.769 -> people with diabetes whose blood glucose
.42 -> hasn't controlled are more likely to
.34 -> have a stroke
.06 -> so it's important to control those
.829 -> conditions if you're not sure whether
.59 -> you are entitled to free medication
.2 -> I would suggest go and talk to the
.269 -> pharmacist because whilst I felt very
.73 -> overwhelmed by this it actually it
.43 -> really isn't that difficult at all you
.65 -> can sign up for a prepaid prescription
.549 -> service which makes it a lot cheaper so
.639 -> the benefits of taking medication is
.5 -> sort of twofold the first thing that
.629 -> medication is trying to is reduce your
.209 -> risk of having another stroke the other
.639 -> thing that it can do is try and optimize
.129 -> your health after having a stroke so
.62 -> with those things put together hopefully
.48 -> those medications will really work for
.28 -> you
.669 -> if you want to know what the tablets for
.459 -> if you've got any concerns at all go and
.889 -> talk to your doctor because I do feel
.449 -> that they are the best people to advise
.37 -> you if you're concerned if you have to
.519 -> pay for your medication if you concerned
.519 -> am your gonna do that if you've got to
.709 -> whether you can be exempt from paying
.84 -> for it I will suggest go and speak to a
.909 -> pharmacist I felt very very overwhelmed
.76 -> by this after having a stroke it's
.34 -> really important to listen to the advice
.139 -> of the variety of health professionals
.629 -> they're going to be looking after you
.099 -> straight after hospital and then the
.349 -> time that you go back into the community
.299 -> there'll be GPS
.829 -> they'll be physios there'll be
.03 -> occupational therapists all these people
.489 -> will have specialist knowledge about
.489 -> your stroke the key thing is if you do
.099 -> have any concerns then your GP is a good
.829 -> starting point very likely you'll see
.75 -> the stroke specialists in the outpatient
.629 -> department over the next few months once
.06 -> you've been diagnosed with having a
.829 -> stroke and again that's a good point of
.569 -> cor to raise any issues that you have if
.84 -> you've got any concerns yourself speak
.909 -> to your family as well and make sure
.32 -> that they're aware of your concerns and
.599 -> again these can be raised with
.22 -> health professionals over the next
.81 -> coming months and in years straight
.33 -> patients a lot can also go to pharmacist
.54 -> pharmacist will be able to advise them
.86 -> about how to take the medicines for the
.63 -> stroke they also will be able to find a
.27 -> shion's on what are other medicines that
.94 -> they are able to take read the
.18 -> instructions in the box if you can't get
.46 -> something else read them for you you
.6 -> know there's plenty ways of finding out
.81 -> but if they do make you fat and I do
-> make you have fun that it used to be
.22 -> alive even when I mean is doing it and
.17 -> that's the that's the main thing that he
.69 -> still here
.2 -> [Music]
.8 -> you
