Reading Blood Pressure

Reading Blood Pressure

Reading Blood Pressure

Welcome to this introduction to the skill of reading blood pressure. There are many parts to the skill of taking a blood pressure. This video is focused on learning to read the gauge. You will listen to several blood pressure readings.

You will then record your reading, so you will need some paper and a pen or pencil.

12.94 -> welcome to this introduction to the
15.619 -> skill of reading blood pressure there
18.44 -> are many parts to the skill of taking a
20.78 -> blood pressure this video is focused on
23.9 -> learning to read the gauge you will
26.93 -> listen to several blood pressure
28.55 -> readings and you will then record your
32.119 -> reading so you will need some paper and
34.67 -> a pen or pencil the instrument used is
38.54 -> called a sphygmomanometer you will be
41.87 -> able to say this word it takes a bit of
44.72 -> practice a manometer is a device that
48.68 -> measures pressure Spig which rhymes with
52.19 -> Fig relates to blood broken into its
56.66 -> parts
57.26 -> it is sphygmomanometer the skill we are
62.45 -> practicing is to coordinate what you
64.939 -> hear with what you see on the gauge you
69.079 -> will listen for the first sound which is
72.2 -> the systolic blood pressure next listen
76.189 -> for when the sound stops this is the
79.759 -> diastolic blood pressure then write down
83.42 -> your measurement every measurement has a
86.24 -> unit that is part of recording the
88.88 -> reading for blood pressure the unit of
92.209 -> measurement is mm Hg this stands for
97.689 -> millimeters of mercury HG is the
102.109 -> chemical symbol for mercury
104.38 -> even though mercury is rarely used in
107.899 -> blood pressure devices today this
110.569 -> remains the traditional unit of measure
113.029 -> when recording the blood pressure
114.859 -> measurement write down two numbers as a
118.399 -> fraction the top number indicates the
121.729 -> systolic blood pressure when the heart
124.189 -> contracts with full force the bottom
127.669 -> number is the diastolic blood pressure
130.069 -> when the heart rests and refills also
134.3 -> write down the unit M
136.41 -> HG honest figma manometer gauge each
140.55 -> mark or line stands for a unit of -
144.47 -> there are no odd numbers on this gauge
148.64 -> no matter what you measure you can only
151.95 -> read what the units allow round up or
155.79 -> down but don't make up numbers that are
158.91 -> not on the scale these longer marks
162.06 -> indicate units of 10 there is not space
165.78 -> on the gauge to write all the numbers
168.26 -> look at where 80 is marked and where 100
172.65 -> is marked the long line in between
175.64 -> indicates 90 you can see that the
179.55 -> numbers 100 120 140 are written on the
184.62 -> gauge the unnumbered long lines indicate
189.42 -> 110 130 150 between the marked numbers
196.13 -> the short lines all equal to look at 100
200.79 -> and 120 the long line in between is 110
205.68 -> and the short lines equal 102 104 106
212.09 -> 108 the long line 110 short line 112 114
219.5 -> 116 118 long line 120 what do you think
226.59 -> the number is just one line under 140 if
231.2 -> your answer is 138 then you are correct
235.91 -> now let's look at the markings as the
238.86 -> needle goes down the gauge let's start
242.28 -> at 150 what number is the needle
246.78 -> pointing to now it's indicating 138 now
256.709 -> the needle is pointing at 110
263.03 -> where is the needle pointing now it is
267.72 -> indicating 6
269.37 -> eight now for the moment you've been
271.979 -> waiting for these sounds are from a
275.1 -> simulator armed and do not sound the
278.1 -> same as a real person's blood pressure
280.76 -> but the idea is to listen for the sounds
284.31 -> and mark where you hear the first sound
287.52 -> and the sound stopping we will listen to
292.65 -> six different blood pressures and pause
295.44 -> between each to give you time to record
299.04 -> your measurement after all six blood
303.03 -> pressures have played the answers will
305.76 -> be shown here we go
315.99 -> you
334.42 -> you
369.27 -> you
401.28 -> you
430.35 -> you
434.03 -> you
466.4 -> you
499.91 -> you
509.8 -> you have now heard six different blood
512.62 -> pressure readings and recorded your
515.349 -> measurement here are the answers to
518.37 -> blood pressure's 1 2 & 3 and here are
523.69 -> the answers to blood pressure's 4 5 & 6
529.68 -> did you all come within plus or minus 4
534.01 -> millimeters mercury with your readings
536.709 -> compared to the answers that is the
540.37 -> standard for accuracy for our course for
543.579 -> the skill of measuring blood pressure
545.88 -> after some practice you will come within
549.82 -> 2 millimeters mercury compared to
553.06 -> another person listening with you to the
556.72 -> same blood pressure you are not born
559.959 -> knowing how to do this it takes practice
563.7 -> now one more time
565.66 -> everyone say sphygmomanometer thank you
570.07 -> all for participating in this exercise I
573.16 -> hope it was helpful please contact your
577.06 -> instructor if you have any questions
