Prince Quire’s Stroke Story

Prince Quire’s Stroke Story

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke. One of those people was Prince Quire, who is African American. At only 39 years old, he was younger than the typical stroke patient, but EMTs know that a stroke can happen at any age. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death for all Americans, including African Americans, but African Americans are twice as likely to have a stroke as whites are.

4.94 -> [PRINCE QUIRE] I was one of those guys that just—just afraid
8.5 -> of the doctor, so I was not going for a regular checkup. But I had a high blood pressure condition
16.58 -> that I wasn’t aware of —just—just blindsided me.
20.56 -> I go to work in the evening, so prior to work, I usually go about an hour to the gym before
24.74 -> I go to work—went in a little bit earlier, did cardio, worked out, and then at the end
33.069 -> of my workout I went to play some basketball. And all of a sudden, I just felt dizzy, and
38.42 -> I started holding onto the wall, holding onto my friends. He said, “Lift your left hand,”
43.01 -> and I barely could move my left hand. So he said immediately, “Call 9-1-1; this
47.6 -> guy's—having a stroke.” And I remember the paramedics coming by, and they said,
51.07 -> “in able to save this guy, we have to airlift him immediately to Grady Hospital.”
55.2 -> Man, it was a blood clot to the brain; it was a major, major stroke. So they had to
59.62 -> go through my groin, through my body, up in my brain and take out the blood clot.
64.36 -> [DR. MICHAEL FRANKEL] The most common type of stroke is when an
66.42 -> artery is blocked. When that artery is blocked, then blood flow can’t get to the brain,
70.83 -> and that part of the brain stops working. If that part of the brain stops working, then
75.429 -> you have symptoms like weakness on one side of the body or difficulty speaking.
79.9 -> [JACQUIE DOZIER] Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death
82.879 -> for all Americans, including African Americans, but African Americans are twice as likely
88.239 -> to have a stroke compared to whites.
90.52 -> [PRINCE QUIRE] Grady was really good to take good care of me;
91.989 -> even today, they still do [laugh]. They’d follow up with me after the hospital and make
95.97 -> sure everything was okay. Hardest time I had: changing my diet. I think it was hardest time,
101.129 -> I mean—like I said, it was after 40 years of eating a certain way, all of a sudden to
105.199 -> change that. But I think it’s a change for life. Prior to my stroke, I didn’t eat a
110.87 -> lot of fruits and vegetables at all. Today, two to four pieces of fruits a day and vegetables
117.08 -> two to three times a day.
119.28 -> My kids, they were happy when I came home,
121.29 -> and when they see me exercising and trying to eat right, you know, they encourage me,
126.319 -> and I try to get them encouraged also so we can do this together.
130.3 -> [JACQUIE DOZIER] We want people to know that stroke is preventable
134.48 -> and treatable and there is hope. There are things you can do. You can work with your
139 -> doctor to reduce your risk, and regularly checking your blood pressure is important.
144.17 -> [PRINCE QUIRE] I keep a log of my blood pressure, and it
147.87 -> has been controlled. This whole year, hasn’t gone over 120. I want to be a spokesperson
153.83 -> for this, to be honest with you. What I want to say—first thing is, please,
157.34 -> please, please go to the doctor. Get yourself checked first. It’s very important. Get
161.6 -> yourself checked to see where you are, and if you have to go on medication, do it.
165.67 -> All my friends—I mean, I tell them every single day, “Listen, man, you’ve got to
169.01 -> change your diet 100%. Start with your diet first, and then just gradually start walking;
174.27 -> start getting this exercise.” So all my friends—you know, I’m an advocate of
178.56 -> being healthy and eating right now. And I think what motivates me the most is
182.91 -> my four kids. I want to be able to see them grow up, go to college, you know, have their
187.27 -> own family, and me passing down this eating right and the healthy lifestyle and they're
192.44 -> passing that on to their kids. So I think that’s my biggest motivation:
195.2 -> just watching my kids grow up and showing a good example.
