Hypertension known as a ‘silent killer’ | Part 1

Hypertension also called high blood pressure, is when the force of blood pumping through the arteries is too strong. Arteries are blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. High blood pressure makes it harder for the body to pump blood and can cause arteries to become narrow or stiff. If the condition goes uncontrolled or untreated, it can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and other health problems.\r

.319 -> hypertension it is often called the
.639 -> silent killer it rarely causes symptoms
.92 -> until it is extremely high or has done
.56 -> damage to other organs in your body for
.38 -> this very reason you should have your
.82 -> blood pressure checked regularly by your
.219 -> physician well today Dr Tiffany Randolph
.44 -> with cone Health Heart and Vascular at
.08 -> drawbridge Parkway is here to help spot
.06 -> the signs before it is too late so let's
.66 -> get right into it we hear the terms
.64 -> hypertension and high blood pressure are
.98 -> they the same thing
.96 -> great question they are the same thing
.18 -> so when we talk about blood pressure we
.219 -> think about two numbers the systolic is
.8 -> the top number that is how much force
.04 -> your vessels feel every time your heart
.02 -> squeezes and then the bottom number or
.48 -> the diastolic is how much pressure is
.059 -> left inside the vessels in between
.86 -> heartbeats a totally normal blood
.26 -> pressure would be less than 120 over 80.
.039 -> 120 over 80. so that is kind of where we
.199 -> need to like gauge ourselves so like if
.239 -> they went to like the CVS and stuck
.86 -> their hand their arm into the thing they
.719 -> should be looking for that 120 over 80.
.7 -> all right so what is happening in our
.1 -> body when we have high blood pressure
.799 -> unfortunately many things so when your
.56 -> blood pressure is high it puts
.18 -> unnecessary force on all of your organs
.46 -> so there's increased pressure on your
.5 -> brain on your heart on your kidneys and
.439 -> all your blood vessels and over time
.42 -> that can lead to increased risk of heart
.02 -> attacks Strokes heart failure it makes
.74 -> you more likely to have end-stage kidney
.2 -> disease where you might need dialysis it
.659 -> even raises the risk of developing
.28 -> dementia okay so we called it the silent
.799 -> killer at the beginning and that is
.02 -> because a lot of people don't even know
.7 -> that they have high blood pressure at
.159 -> what point should you be tracking your
.6 -> blood pressure
.22 -> oh great question so really by the time
.1 -> you're 18 assuming you don't have any
.2 -> other risks you should be getting your
.42 -> blood pressure checked at least once
.52 -> every couple of years so that means if
.32 -> you're not obese you don't have diabetes
.659 -> you don't smoke or any of those types of
.759 -> things at least every couple of years
.039 -> if you develop any of those risk factors
.34 -> or what by the time you're 40 you really
.98 -> need to have your blood blood pressure
.78 -> checked every year
.58 -> but if you already have high blood
.68 -> pressure then it might be very helpful
.14 -> to check it even more frequently
.58 -> especially as you're needing to make any
.379 -> medication changes or things like that
.3 -> because we find that actually people's
.879 -> blood pressure sometimes might be higher
.62 -> in the office than it is at home that's
.599 -> something we call white coat
.86 -> hypertension and so if your blood
.84 -> pressures aren't as high as at home or
.879 -> in a more restful setting then we may
.36 -> not need to give you as much medication
.48 -> we also sometimes find that there might
.76 -> be patterns to your blood pressure so if
.62 -> you're checking your blood pressures in
.879 -> the morning and the evening you might
.44 -> see a pattern that would help us to
.12 -> decide what's the best time of day where
.459 -> you should take a blood pressure
.42 -> medications okay yeah it can be one of
-> those things you get nervous when you go
.2 -> to the doctor's office right so your
.64 -> blood pressure raises that's kind of a
.14 -> normal thing so also have to check it at
.66 -> home when you check it at home you
.16 -> should do it in a certain way
.08 -> yes so it's important first of all to
.9 -> make sure that you sit and rest for
.58 -> about five minutes even small exercise
.34 -> just walking around your house things
.26 -> like that will raise your blood pressure
.879 -> so you want to sit in a comfortable
.86 -> position with your feet flat on the
.959 -> floor when you check your blood pressure
.06 -> you always want to make sure that the
.34 -> cuff is at Heart level so you can sit
.8 -> like at your kitchen table you can sit
.9 -> on the side of your couch and rest it on
.7 -> the arm if you have your arm up in the
.86 -> air or hanging down it really will alter
.44 -> your blood pressure okay good to know
.239 -> all right so what are the dangerous
.56 -> complications that could happen if you
.36 -> have high blood pressure especially for
.92 -> a long time unchecked
.26 -> so hypertension everywhere you have a
.739 -> blood vessel in your body it can wreak
.36 -> havoc so it can cause problems with with
.76 -> vision it can cause Strokes dementia it
.78 -> can cause heart failure heart attacks it
.48 -> even can cause peripheral vascular
.099 -> disease difficulty getting blood flow to
.08 -> your legs and increase the risk of
.42 -> amputations and other things that of
.58 -> course none of us want no okay so would
-> someone who maybe isn't checking their
.859 -> blood pressure regularly would they have
.959 -> any kind of indication that they might
.639 -> have high blood pressure
.1 -> so like you said at the beginning of the
.259 -> segment unfortunately it's the silent
.24 -> killer because most people really don't
.1 -> feel anything when their blood pressure
.9 -> is elevated some people are more attuned
.139 -> to their bodies and sometimes once your
.24 -> blood pressures get really high you
.46 -> might feel symptoms like fatigue you may
.4 -> have nosebleeds one really common side
.34 -> effect is headaches or even shortness of
.16 -> breath but again many times your blood
.44 -> pressure has been very high for a long
.419 -> time before any of those things might
.34 -> come up right and you're thinking
.78 -> fatigue and you're thinking headache
.28 -> you're thinking those are things that I
.419 -> just get because I'm stressed at work
.86 -> and you might not really be correlating
.9 -> them with your health
.88 -> exactly right okay all right we're going
.34 -> to take a quick break but we're back
.66 -> talking about high blood pressure and
.22 -> hypertension in just a few moments
