Study: 16.5M Americans at risk of stroke from aggressive exercise

A new study suggests that millions of Americans are putting themselves at risk of stroke by aggressively working out. KDKA’s John Shumway shares the story.

.539 -> well a new study suggests that millions
-> of Americans are putting themselves at
.279 -> risk of a stroke by aggressively working
.919 -> out yeah this is frightening the study
.139 -> in the journal physics of fluid suggests
.719 -> that the exercise could dislodge plaque
.66 -> causing the stroke so who exactly is at
.96 -> risk new this morning John Shumway went
.06 -> searching for some answers for us so
.98 -> John what did you learn about this a lot
.199 -> of people is the answer about 16.5
.68 -> million Americans now these are folks
.599 -> who have plaque that is built up in
.64 -> their carotid arteries on either side of
.68 -> their neck
.18 -> working out get your blood pumping and
.12 -> it does increase your blood pressure a
.28 -> risk for people who have plaque building
.739 -> up in the two main arteries in their
.84 -> neck so in these patients if you were to
.36 -> aggressively exercise the theoretical
.12 -> knowledge suggests that the sharing
.28 -> forces of the blood flow because the
.379 -> demand would be higher
.36 -> can theoretically cause some of these
.539 -> plaques to break off and shoot off into
.719 -> the brain and cause a stroke but Ahn
.299 -> neurologist Dr Raul Chandra says risk
.84 -> factors are your best indicator of a
.84 -> potential issue you do have traditional
.24 -> underlying risk factors like high blood
-> pressure high cholesterol diabetes you
.759 -> do have a higher risk of having plaque
.46 -> buildup tobacco abuse Smoking may that
-> be cigarettes or vape both of them does
.14 -> increase your risk of having plaque
.7 -> buildup but compared against the broad
.74 -> population Dr Chandra believes we're
.439 -> talking about the very small section of
.96 -> patients who already have a plaque
.18 -> buildup and suggesting that there could
.74 -> be an increased risk so if you haven't
.84 -> had an incident and you were otherwise
-> healthy he says don't stop working out
.42 -> so we do continuously recommend
.799 -> exercising because that's going to
.88 -> prevent the plaque build up to happen to
-> begin with and that's where we ideally
.46 -> want
.72 -> now this is not an issue of the old age
.84 -> really isn't a factor as much as
.88 -> lifestyle and eating habits and if
.34 -> you're looking for indicators that you
.56 -> may have a problem Dr Chandra said look
.48 -> for maybe weakness on one side of your
.52 -> body numbness on one side a facial
.28 -> drooping or slurred speech any of those
.739 -> you should get checked out before you do
.62 -> that heavy workout I mean that it's
.2 -> truly frightening so how do you discover
.959 -> the plaque and I mean what and then what
.3 -> can be done about it well they can do a
.16 -> scan and if it's a mild amount of plaque
.52 -> it can be treated with medication if not
.68 -> they surgically go in and actually clean
.599 -> out your pipes if you will but that
.76 -> really is a last resort but once that is
.8 -> cleared out then you get on a proper
.78 -> diet and safe exercise
.94 -> there you go listen to your body and
.04 -> talk to your doctor if something doesn't
.84 -> feel right let them know thanks John
