Stories from the heart: Phil's story

Phil was diagnosed with heart failure and had 3 stents inserted, along with a coronary artery bypass. Medical innovation has played a major role in Phil’s recovery.

The HRI’s mission is to prevent death and suffering from cardiovascular diseases, a complex array of diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels.

We will address areas of unmet need in cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease, hypertension, heart failure, preeclampsia, congenital heart disease and pulmonary vascular disease, as well as metabolic complications such as diabetes.

-> the evening before I presented to the
.469 -> hospital was was the first indication
.659 -> that there was a really that there was
.309 -> something that I wrong wasn't the usual
.71 -> from the chest clenching or heavy weight
.13 -> it was more of a am a sharp stabbing
.89 -> pain under my armpit was the pain that
.23 -> was not normal for me very very severe
.99 -> so it took themselves trade-offs in the
.099 -> hospital normal tests were taken and
.47 -> over the period of you know 24 to 48
.74 -> hours it was diagnosed that I had had a
.329 -> heart attack and then I remained in
.45 -> hospital for some additional procedures
.57 -> which included stenting a stamp is a
.27 -> it's a metal mesh scaffold which is
.539 -> placed into the narrowing of the artery
.7 -> open up with a bullet or expanded with a
.07 -> balloon and it at that then keeps the
.469 -> artery open I had three stents inserted
.71 -> so there were no issues for the better
.37 -> part of 12 12 or 15 map and then what
.45 -> occurred was I was starting to fall back
.9 -> into that tied routine nausea some of
.1 -> the common symptoms of the heart disease
.07 -> appointment what occurred was I had an
.14 -> attack I was put through the angiogram
.42 -> on the Monday morning and was basically
.369 -> told pretty much straight out of the
.68 -> angiogram that I've needed to have about
.189 -> us as far as a bypass operation a
.5 -> cardiac surgeons what we call harvest
.869 -> normal blood vessels from another part
.45 -> of the body such as from the arm from
.759 -> the league or from with from within
.409 -> inside of the chest and those normal
.45 -> arteries are then attached beyond the
.21 -> narrow and that occurs
.4 -> in the disease to archery and by doing
.41 -> so the blood flow is that used to bypass
.42 -> the narrowing that was causing the
.28 -> intial coronary artery disease or the
.87 -> blockages in the heart and that's why
.43 -> it's called a coronary bypass it is a
.32 -> major operation but involved and there
.42 -> is quite a significant amount of
.68 -> recovery that's involved part of it but
.99 -> it's a very useful and and long-lasting
.179 -> operation but without come the bypass
.93 -> was as I'd expected the first few days
.15 -> in the hospital were quite tough
.97 -> interjected by periods of a limited
.16 -> depression but certainly some
.99 -> introverted feelings also with some
.53 -> hallucinations on the back of I would
.59 -> think the medications that you need to
.59 -> be on and then followed by the serious
.87 -> amount of pain when surface came out of
.85 -> hospital it was quite scary to see that
.31 -> he was so sick and the kids and I well
.65 -> the kids especially didn't quite know
.88 -> how to handle it since the boy past has
.13 -> been a number of changes that that was
.5 -> made I've gone back to a different role
.35 -> which has significantly less stress
.769 -> which had been a godsend it's allowed me
.78 -> to focus on my health and my family
.09 -> we've made changes in our eating habits
.64 -> I found post-operative counseling really
.97 -> really helpful that's actually helped me
.85 -> in dealing with my own mortality
.33 -> which was a struggle nice cars the
.71 -> fleshy houses they're all great but you
.01 -> know extending your life and being
.72 -> healthy being around to see important
.77 -> important moments and times in your
.82 -> family's life is really what's important
.25 -> o heart researchers of this is so
.93 -> important to us because this has now
.49 -> happened to us it's something that you
.83 -> always never think is going to happen to
.54 -> you but it has and it's kept my husband
.53 -> alive I think medical innovation has
.82 -> basically an over me to still be here I
.23 -> think it's open his eyes that something
.09 -> could have happened to him and so
.76 -> therefore he is a lot more appreciative
.25 -> of the time that he has with the family
.01 -> I will it in exciting times when it
.87 -> comes to cardiac research they have been
.73 -> such great development that have
.02 -> occurred in the last few decades you
.82 -> don't know who this disease is going to
.37 -> affect it could be your wife your
.95 -> husband your son your grandson please
.18 -> help as much as you can
.74 -> [Music]
