0.03 -> Hello, I'm feeling good today because I want to talk about coffee and blood pressure. What's relationship between coffee and blood pressure? Does coffee
7.799 -> actually, raise your blood pressure when you drink it? If you've got high blood pressure, should you be drinking coffee?
13.54 -> That's what's coming up next. I'll see you in a couple of seconds
17.38 -> If you want 20/20 ideas to better health
20.01 -> You've come to the right channel hosted by the warm and lovely doctor Joe. Now for today's topic, please welcome on stage
28.24 -> Dr. Joe
35.38 -> Welcome back. I'm Dr Joe of TheDrJoe.com If this is your first time on this channel, can I extend them warm welcome to you. This is your home of
42.01 -> 20/20 ideas to better health. So if you haven't subscribed yet, please do subscribe
46.75 -> so like I said
47.73 -> I'm feeling good today because I want to talk about coffee and blood pressure. The relationship between coffee and blood pressure
52.59 -> Whether it raises blood pressure or not?
55.27 -> Now for the purpose of this presentation, I'm going to split it into
58.809 -> 3. The first thing I want to talk about is the science and then I'm going to talk about the relationship between coffee
64.809 -> and blood pressure for the general population and then I'm going to talk specifically about coffee and blood pressure for people
72.28 -> who've got high blood pressure and then I'm gonna round up with one or two suggestions, especially for people who've got high blood pressure
79.06 -> So let's get cracking
80.88 -> I have to say that the relationship between coffee use and blood pressure is not very straightforward
87.119 -> And this is actually as exemplified in this recent study
91.81 -> That's telling us that the most recent findings aimed at clarifying the role of caffeine consumption and high blood pressure are
99.549 -> conflicting and difficult to interpret and that's because you have studies like this one that tells us that
104.799 -> Regular caffeine intake actually does increase blood pressure. However, when ingested through coffee
111.28 -> The blood pressure effect is small.
114.64 -> it's small
115.81 -> This is also
117.61 -> shown by this other review
119.829 -> That looked at quite a number of studies pulled them together and their conclusion was that in
126.04 -> Hypertensive individuals, caffeine intake produces an acute increase in blood pressure for about three hours or thereabout
134.26 -> however, current evidence does not support an association between the longer term coffee consumption and
141.01 -> Increased blood pressure or between habitual coffee consumption and increase in cardiovascular disease
149.35 -> So you've got that and you also have this one here that talks about
153.85 -> the fact that actually the association between coffee consumption and cardiovascular disease is inverse in which case
160.15 -> You know people who use coffee actually do reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease
165.43 -> so you've got all of these conflicting messages here and
169.12 -> it's a little bit difficult to just draw straightforward conclusions in all of these and
173.5 -> then I'll tell you next what I actually think of all of these and because I'm going to tell you what my position is and
178.77 -> What I will advise you to do if you are, you know somebody who is a subscriber to this channel
183.63 -> So here a few facts for the general population
187.27 -> Coffee is a vasoconstrictor
189.58 -> What is the vasoconstrictor? A vasoconstrictor is an agent that has the ability to stiffen the walls of the blood vessels
196.54 -> So what this means is that the blood vessel walls are not relaxed, the pressure within the vessel is gonna rise
204.19 -> So, essentially because coffee is a vasoconstrictor. Coffee will raise your blood pressure. That is the fact
211.6 -> If it raises our blood pressure, by how much? Well, it's a modest rise
216.94 -> So say for instance your systolic blood pressure, which is the top value is about 145
223.12 -> You should expect that if you drink coffee your blood pressure may rise up to about 153
228.37 -> The systolic, that is. 153 to about 155. Right? So, you know, it's a modest rise
235.03 -> So if this rise does happen, how long does it last? Well,
238.98 -> you'll be glad to know that the rise is temporary and the effect will last for an average of about 3 hours. So
245.83 -> That's good
247.57 -> What does that also mean? Well, the implication of that is that, if we consume coffee on a regular basis
254.05 -> It doesn't have any potential to cause us any long-term damage to our cardiovascular health because the effect is temporary
262.36 -> So that's good news all round for the general population
265.56 -> So let me say a word or two about coffee and those of us who've got high blood pressure
269.28 -> We've already established that coffee does have a pressor effect on our blood vessels, which means we expect a rise in our blood pressure
275.56 -> Now for those of us who've got high blood pressure that pressor effect is stronger. So
280.449 -> For those of us with high blood pressure,
281.85 -> we should expect a higher rise in our blood pressure compared to somebody who hasn't got high blood pressure. And here's the other thing. That
291.01 -> rise in blood pressure is not responsive to blood pressure medications
294.49 -> So if you take your blood pressure medication in the hope that you want to bring your blood pressure down
299.59 -> after consuming coffee when you have a rise, you
302.5 -> Probably will be disappointed with the response you're going to get. Here is another implication for you
307.889 -> If you got high blood pressure, and you're a habitual coffee drinker
312.039 -> We've already established that the pressor effect of the coffee or caffeine will last for about three hours. Now if you imagine that
320.56 -> After consuming your coffee and in three hours
323.25 -> Then when the effects the Pressor effect is beginning to wear off, if you top up with another cup of coffee
328.38 -> Then the blood pressure goes up again
330.25 -> And then same thing happens again when you have in another coffee crash and you need to top up again
334.56 -> Your blood pressure goes up again. So in effect
337.78 -> you might have a sustainable high blood pressure throughout the day if you drink in several cups of coffee a day
343.599 -> So that's just something to bear the back of your mind if you drink coffee, and you've got high blood pressure
348.55 -> Now there's another
350.77 -> Huge thing that you need to be aware of. There are genetic differences between the way we handle our coffee. Each of us.
357.91 -> We have you know slow metabolizers and then we've got fast metabolizers and that's shown by this study here
366.16 -> Now some people who are fast
369.46 -> Metabolizers they would deal with their coffee load very quickly and but in the same vein those of us who have slow metabolizers
376.68 -> We're gonna take a longer time for us to actually offload our coffee from our system. Which means
382.36 -> if you've got high blood pressure
384.01 -> There's a good chance that your blood pressure may be sustainably high over a longer period if you're a slow metabolizer
390.12 -> so this is something that you have to also bear at the back your mind if you got high blood pressure and you
395.319 -> drink coffee. For me, I'm in slow metabolizer. And I know that effect does last a good number of hours
401.319 -> So after all these do I have any suggestions for you? Of course, I do
404.71 -> For the general public if you don't have any high blood pressure, you're fine
407.729 -> You should not be worried about the effects of coffee on your blood pressure at all
411.19 -> The effect is temporary and it doesn't have any long-term damage on your cardiovascular health. So that's fine
416.129 -> But if you've got high blood pressure
417.539 -> Then you need to be extra careful and I want you to do two tests
420.87 -> One is the first test is I want you to test to see how high your blood pressure actually goes up by when you drink
425.55 -> coffee
426.4 -> The second test is I want you to test for whether you a slow metabolizer or a fast metabolizer
432.099 -> So, how do you do this? I want you to test your blood pressure
435.039 -> 30 minutes after you've had a cup of coffee, 1 hour after you had your cup of coffee, 2 hours as well as 3 hours
440.68 -> Now if your blood pressure is still high after 2, 3 or 4 hours time
444.61 -> Then you are a slow metabolizer in which case you need to be very careful
449.409 -> And here's my other suggestion. I want you to switch to the
454.389 -> Decaffeinated variety. It is safer. And you still enjoy your coffee because the aroma is still the same. The taste is the same
461.529 -> There's no difference at all between them apart from the caffeine content
465.639 -> So decaf is one suggestion. My second suggestion is that if you must drink the
471.819 -> Caffeinated regular coffee, then please limit yourself to just one cup of coffee a day
477.279 -> It works you can then have the decaffeinated variety for the rest of the day and then you should be fine
483.37 -> Now if you enjoyed this video hit the 'Like' button give it a Thumbs-up as usual
487.629 -> And also what I want you to tell me what your tolerance level is
492.719 -> Are you a slow metabolizer, a fast metabolizer? Are you very sensitive to coffee?
497.94 -> Are you very tolerant to coffee? Leave your comments in the comment section. I'm a very sensitive person. I'm very sensitive to caffeine
503.8 -> So I want to know all about your coffee sensitivity right there in the comment section, please
510.279 -> If you haven't subscribed yet, please do subscribe
513.459 -> Now if you want to learn more about all of these I've written a longer article on my blog the link is gonna be in
519.99 -> The video description right there and you you want to read my body go to my blog read all about it there
525.749 -> I think that's about it until next time where this is. Dr. Joe signing out. Enjoy your coffee. Be safe. This is Dr
532.019 -> Joe signing out a second time
