1.201 -> I guests today are Shanna Sykes
and Emily Moody,
3.503 -> extension agents with Clemson's
Rural Health and Nutrition
7.407 -> program. Emily tell me where
you are and what program you're
10.11 -> working on. So I'm in Greenville
County and I'm working on a
12.712 -> program called Health Coaches
for Hypertension Control. So I
15.915 -> work with participants in the
community that have high blood
18.184 -> pressure. And we just cover
topics about nutrition
20.687 -> and physical activity
medication management, stress
23.39 -> management, things like that, all related to hypertension. How
25.992 -> many times do you meet with
them? We meet once every two
29.028 -> weeks for about four months. And is it for a full day or just a
33.032 -> part of the day. We just meet for an hour. And we kind of have
35.802 -> a support group. And we do a lot
of discussions. So I don't wanna
38.405 -> be up there just talkin at them
the whole time. We do a lot of
40.707 -> group discussion. So it's not a
huge commitment for them to do
43.81 -> it. But have you seen any good
results? I have actually.
47.48 -> I had a participant
last week. He came in
49.015 -> and told me they'd cut salt
out of his diet and replaced it
51.684 -> with Misses
Dash. And he likes the spicier
54.687 -> flavor. So he was doing that. And his doctor let him know that
57.59 -> his blood pressure was down to
one thirty over seventy.
60.493 -> So that was great news. That was a pretty good result wasn't it?
62.495 -> Yes ma'am. Okay. Shanna tell us where you're located
65.331 -> and what programs you're involved with. So I'm in
67.901 -> Anderson county. And I also teach the hypertension class as
70.804 -> well. But we also have the first-ever South Carolina
74.374 -> baby cafe. And really it's just a support group for women in the
78.011 -> area who are breastfeeding or want to breastfeed.
81.247 -> I'm a certified lactation counselor. So I can
83.016 -> help them if they have any breastfeeding needs.
85.452 -> And they can just
call us cause sometimes
87.587 -> locations will vary and times might change. We also have a
91.391 -> school wellness check list
where we were trying to reduce
93.793 -> childhood obesity in the county.
We're working with school
96.996 -> district four on that wellness
check list. It's addressing
100.5 -> things such as nutrition and
physical activity in the school
103.403 -> and not just for the students
but also for the teachers
106.539 -> and the staff as well. Now you don't have to go in and
109.509 -> teach every component of that,
do you? Doesn't the
112.412 -> school, you give them
suggestions and ideas. Yeah and
115.915 -> part of it is facilitating in the community anybody that
118.051 -> would love to come in and teach
119.385 -> the kids nutrition or physical
activity. Or you know anything
122.889 -> that they want to teach or do for the teachers as well. And so
126.192 -> it's just making those
connections but also you know
128.595 -> guiding them on directions on
how to improve the nutrition
131.898 -> and physical activity in the
schools.
133.433 -> Well today, I think we were going to specifically
135.235 -> talk about salt
and high blood pressure or
138.505 -> hypertension and why is that
such a connection and why is
142.208 -> it important to learn about it?
Well salt is actually one of the
145.345 -> biggest contributing factors in the diet to high blood pressure
149.148 -> and Americans typically get way more salt than they actually
152.018 -> need and we, about twenty three to twenty four hundred
155.021 -> milligrams is a recommended salt intake daily.
157.957 -> And that's actually about the
size of a teaspoon here. But
161.594 -> people with high blood pressure
they actually need less than
163.696 -> this. And it's about fifteen hundred milligrams.
166.099 -> So if,
that doesn't mean though
168.902 -> that I get to put that much
salt out and use that much
171.404 -> every day because don't a lot
of the foods that are prepared
174.507 -> already have salt in them? So
that's why we're here to talk
177.81 -> about some spices and herbs and
substitute of salt. Because it
181.381 -> is in so many foods already. But
also you know that's not a
185.485 -> whole lot. Even if you're
just sprinkling a little bit
187.587 -> here and there in your
cooking. It can really add up.
189.789 -> And most Americans, how much do
you think that they get
193.593 -> on average? So twenty four hundred is the recommended
196.996 -> amount. Oh gosh I would think maybe three or four.
200.266 -> Thirty four hundred milligrams is how much an average average
203.503 -> American gets, Way more... So it's way more than
205.705 -> they need. Now how about
these salt substitutes that or
209.409 -> what they called lower salt or
something like that in there.
212.312 -> Potassium in, Well, there's a no salt. It's called no salt.
215.782 -> And if you look on the back it'll say potassium
217.784 -> instead of the sodium. And it's a good substitute but you
221.988 -> talk to, you have to talk to
your doctor. Because it does
224.991 -> have potassium in it, it can
interfere with some of the
227.093 -> medication. Oh okay! So don't
just make that switch without,
231.197 -> Don't make that, Always talk to
your doctor too. Well, it looks
235.201 -> like maybe we could use some herbs and decide not to you so
238.204 -> much salt is that what we going
to talk about.
240.306 -> We're actually going to make a little dip for our bread today.
243.309 -> And it's got basil in it, thyme sage, marjoram
249.582 -> and some garlic. I think that's what we put in it. So we have a
251.651 -> little bit of olive oil here. We're just going to drizzle it
254.387 -> on this plate here. Very artistically done.
259.993 -> And then you can sprinkle that. This is to taste.
262.996 -> Now I love a lot of spices and herbs.
264.931 -> So it's just how you like to
taste and how much you like. So.
269.502 -> And from this point we just have a nice spread of bread. And you
273.206 -> just dip it in and that's a
really good appetizer. But tell
277.01 -> me if people want to learn more
about y'all's programs, how to
279.612 -> get that information. So they
can contact their local
281.814 -> extension office. And there's so
many different counties that
285.284 -> have different programs going
on. And that would be the best
287.387 -> way to find out what's going on
in their community. Okay. Thank
290.189 -> you for sharing this
information. I think now we
292.525 -> ought to share the bounty. Yes. Thank you. Very good.
