Keep your young athletes healthy with the help of Shriners Children's Hospital

Keep your young athletes healthy with the help of Shriners Children's Hospital

Shriners Children’s Hospital is located in the heart of Portland’s world-renowned medical community. With kids heading back to school, it’s time to start thinking about our young athletes. Unfortunately, youth sports injuries often occur, especially early in the school year, but Shriners Children’s ha a walk-in fracture and sports injury clinic Monday through Friday.

Athletic trainer, Jessica Martschinske, is here with us today to tell us all about it!

.06 -> welcome back Shriners Children's
.46 -> Hospital is located in the heart of
.04 -> Portland's world-renowned medical
.6 -> community with kids heading back to
.36 -> school we've got to start thinking about
.28 -> our young athletes unfortunately youth
.04 -> sports injuries often occur especially
.74 -> early in the school year but Shriner's
.32 -> children's has a walk-in fracture and
.199 -> Sports Injury Clinic Monday through
.3 -> Friday that's what we like to hear so
.16 -> here to tell us all about it is athletic
.34 -> trainer Jessica Jessica thank you so
.32 -> much for being here thank you for having
.7 -> me oh my goodness you brought the brace
.68 -> out I did and I have to say I just got
.02 -> flashbacks I tore my ACL in high school
.6 -> and I was like no the brace is back
.68 -> it's a hard thing to want to wear but
.66 -> it's needed for a lot of surgeries
.34 -> absolutely
.12 -> during the summer we see ACL tears
.94 -> that's kind of why I brought that but
.14 -> you also see kids with patellas that are
.6 -> dislocating you can see unstable
.579 -> shoulders we see a lot of fractures
.739 -> hence the name Fracture Clinic
.339 -> Jungle Gym injuries you have ankle
.86 -> sprains you know just every part of the
.78 -> body that you can think of these kids
.7 -> are injuring them do you have any tips
.86 -> for parents out there that we can kind
.2 -> of uh prevent even you know you guys are
.14 -> taking care of the people when they come
.46 -> through the door but is there anything
.02 -> we can do to prevent even having that
.02 -> incident occur there are a lot of things
.36 -> to do to prevent one of the things to
.159 -> highlight is knowing the demands of your
.68 -> sport yes right so you have a
.479 -> cross-country athlete their demands are
.28 -> a lot different than an offensive
.02 -> lineman yeah or a soccer player and so
.78 -> knowing that your cardiovascular fitness
.36 -> is up to date that your strength is up
.119 -> to date that you are actually working on
.759 -> the demands that your sport is going to
.439 -> challenge you yes
.659 -> there
.74 -> difference between like what parents
.72 -> should be looking out for versus what
.579 -> coaches should be looking out for during
.619 -> those practice times and then when kids
.54 -> get home kind of trying to recharge
.119 -> right is it like Mom telling you you
.52 -> better ice after right you better do
.68 -> this yeah it's almost like all hands on
.539 -> deck right so you have a lot of
.459 -> advocates for you out in the community
.959 -> as a kid if you're like you said your
.42 -> your parents and your coaches and so
.52 -> you're looking for those kids that are
.379 -> consistently complaining of maybe the
.599 -> same thing it could be an overuse injury
.7 -> like shin splints that turn into a
.62 -> stress fracture wow so you really want
.78 -> to listen to your kid and act
.5 -> accordingly because it might be
.72 -> something bigger and that's something
.099 -> that Shriners children's offers is that
-> support and a resource in the community
.76 -> yeah so parents and coaches we got to
.68 -> work as a team to get these kids
.66 -> together I know one mistake I used to
.519 -> always make as a kid I didn't take
.379 -> stretching really seriously so and I
.959 -> know that's a that's a common thing so
.48 -> kids when you're in that stretching
.92 -> circle before games before practice you
.14 -> really got to do it or else that ACL
.42 -> injury can be right around the corner
.58 -> you need to warm up you need to hydrate
.56 -> you need to sleep don't be on video
.66 -> games till 2 A.M all that is you know an
.739 -> all-encompassing to your health and your
.019 -> performance if you want to perform
.879 -> better not just avoid an injury it's
.879 -> it's all inclusive yeah what are some of
.099 -> the mistakes that you see parents making
.5 -> in terms of kind of like caring for
.14 -> their child their young athletes like
.959 -> all encompassing uh it might be the
.18 -> dismissing of oh it's just a bruise or
.7 -> is not a big deal
.62 -> you know it might be a bigger deal so
.14 -> really listening to your kid in regards
.959 -> to that and giving them the supplies to
.44 -> you know be the best athlete and the
.08 -> healthiest athlete they can supplying
.239 -> them with a healthy alternatives to
.459 -> snacks yeah as well I can see that kind
.34 -> of like Mom and Dad be like we're trying
.959 -> to get a scholarship here I need you to
.819 -> Shake it Off get back in the game that's
.94 -> awesome that's true okay so tell
.56 -> everyone where um or the times for the
.44 -> clinic when are you guys available so we
.72 -> are available 7 30 in the morning bright
.06 -> and early until four in the afternoon so
.12 -> even if it's an evening injury that it
.519 -> might not necessarily need to go to the
.739 -> ER but you want a pediatric orthopedic
.739 -> specialist to look at it come bright and
.72 -> early before school starts next get an
.18 -> x-ray get an exam get somebody who
-> understands pediatric injuries to say we
.24 -> need an MRI or hey you're going to be
.1 -> fine you know give you two thumbs up and
.08 -> feel better about going back to
.06 -> Athletics that's going to be so helpful
.44 -> for parents out there I know you know
-> schedules are busy thank you so much for
.04 -> being here I really appreciate you got
.84 -> to get that thing away from me I get bad
.52 -> flashbacks huge thank you turn sponsors
.88 -> guys as Shriners Children's Hospital you
.04 -> see all that info on your screen pick up
.9 -> the phone uh and stop by for a visit
.419 -> today whenever you need it
