Ronny Jo's Story - It can't be a heart attack

Ronny Jo couldn’t sleep one night due to chest and arm pain and nausea. Not wanting to wake her daughter, she called a friend to come help her. After investigating her symptoms, she realized she may be having a heart attack, but still kept thinking “This can’t be a heart attack”.

3.96 -> I know it sounds crazy, but at the time, I was a single mom, and I didn't have time to be sick.
9.68 -> About 9 o'clock that evening, I started not feeling very well.
13.24 -> I thought I had heart burn.
15.74 -> 10 o'clock or so, I went to bed.
17.84 -> Probably dozed off for 10 or 15 minutes.
20.8 -> Um, woke up, and my arms hurt, my back hurt.
24.9 -> Not horrible, but I just knew something wasn't right.
28.28 -> So I sat there for a while, then I started feeling nauseous.
31.36 -> So, I got up, went in the bathroom. I got really sick.
35.36 -> Well, I had taken my phone with me to the bathroom just in case
38.58 -> And by the time I was done getting sick, my arms hurt so bad, I couldn't hardly pick up my phone.
44.36 -> Um, but I got the phone and I texted Stephanie
46.82 -> And I said, "You need to come over here. Something's not right."
49.88 -> As I was sitting on the bathroom floor, we started Googling symptoms of a heart attack.
54.3 -> And I had, I would say, 9 out of 10. At least.
58.54 -> So, we discussed it for a while as to what to do.
61.5 -> I hated to get Alexis up - it was a school night, you know.
64.68 -> We finally decided I should probably go to the hospital.
67.32 -> So I got up, I got dressed.
68.84 -> By the time I got dressed, I was exhausted.
71.48 -> I had zero energy left.
74.32 -> I just felt horrible.
76.46 -> Even though the symptoms say "heart attack," surely that's not really what it was.
81.04 -> I just kept thinking, "It can't be a heart attack."
85.34 -> So most people have heard about the classic signs of a heart attack.
89.14 -> These typically consist of chest pressure, chest heaviness, a squeezing sensation, tightness.
95.86 -> This is the nature of the pain that most people experience.
100.26 -> However, especially in ladies, you may have pain in the back,
104.42 -> or just feeling weak, tired, sleep disturbance, dizziness
111.08 -> And these kind of symptoms can be very common without heart attack, as well.
115.78 -> And in case of Ronny, she was very prompt in terms of figuring this out.
119.92 -> And she said, "It was not like a heart attack," but she was very active as symptoms went on to be more intense.
126.72 -> Calling a friend, she did, and making a decision that she should seek help.
131 -> In fact, the friend really helped her.
132.86 -> Well, we called the ambulance but the first responders, of course, got there first,
135.86 -> And they gave me a nitro pill.
139.28 -> Didn't really help the pain or discomfort at all.
142.32 -> So I was convinced it really wasn't probably my heart.
144.76 -> So we got in the ambulance and they did a mini EKG in the ambulance, and
149.62 -> it showed I wasn't having a heart attack.
152.44 -> So the ambulance driver called it in and said that he was bringing a patient in
156.64 -> complaining about chest pains, but no signs of heart issues on the EKG.
163.44 -> When I got to the hospital, Dr. Sharma was already there.
168.3 -> Dr. Sharma suggested that they do a sonogram of my heart.
171.04 -> He said, "We gotta figure out what's going on."
172.96 -> Once we put her on the cath lab table, we did a very emergent ultrasound of her heart
179.36 -> to see is this back pain coming from an aorta problem, or is she really having a heart attack.
185.48 -> Her EKG was not the most classic for a heart attack.
189.08 -> So once we did that, we knew her aorta was fine
192.18 -> and the front part of her heart was not moving.
195.84 -> So we knew the artery to this place must be 100% blocked.
201.44 -> The last thing I remember was him standing, looking at the results
206.86 -> and he looked at his team and he said, "We need to hurry."
211.44 -> And with that blocked artery then, we proceeded putting a wire through those blockages
216.1 -> and a small balloon to see how the flow is
219.3 -> and once that was established, we then put in a stent.
222.84 -> And with a single stent, she had an excellent outcome.
226.8 -> And got her pain relieved very promptly.
229.84 -> After I was able to get up and move around, I mean, I could instantly tell
234.5 -> the difference in how I - I didn't know I felt bad before, but I knew I felt better afterwards.
239.38 -> The care I had while I was at Mosaic Life Care was great.
242.7 -> The ER staff was wonderful, the ICU nurses were wonderful.
246.98 -> I can't thank them enough for all they did while I was here.
250.48 -> It still amazes me that this all started on a Tuesday night
254.14 -> I was discharged Thursday morning and back to work on Friday.
259.26 -> But for whatever reason, the nurse on duty that night made that phone call.
262.8 -> And Dr. Sharma was at the hospital when I got there.
266.36 -> And without that phone call, I probably wouldn't have got to see my daughter turn 12
270.78 -> and I wouldn't be here today to tell my story.
