An Innovation That's Helping Heart Failure Patients

An Innovation That's Helping Heart Failure Patients

This week’s ‘Innovation In Medicine’ is all about some technology that’s making a big difference for congestive heart failure patients. Jackie Bender is learning how a smart pillow is making it easier for doctors to monitor them remotely.

.467 -> - A key part of good health is being able
.77 -> to work closely with your doctor.
.271 -> And technology can make that relationship even better.
.075 -> And that's what today's, innovation of medicine,
.277 -> is all about.
.912 -> (upbeat music)
.851 -> - Hey guys it's Jackie and I'm here with Dr. Bosavon
.62 -> and we're talking today about an exciting new
.322 -> technology that's making big difference
.058 -> when it comes to congestive heart failure.
.461 -> - Yeah it's a very exciting thing
.563 -> actually we're talking about some very small
.8 -> sensor or a chip we implant in one of the vessels
.603 -> in the lungs.
.105 -> And also the patient go home with a very smart pillow.
.375 -> They have to lay on their back on this pillow.
.711 -> They have to be there for few minutes,
.879 -> and then they have to press a button.
.248 -> And then basically the pressures are recorded
.051 -> and then transmitted to us right away.
.887 -> We can see when the pressures inside the lungs
.69 -> are rising, even before a patient has symptoms.
.427 -> - [Jackie] So the chip and the pillow
.861 -> are able to monitor pressures.
.731 -> What does that have to do with heart failure?
.732 -> - You notice that pressure start rising way before
.669 -> patients have symptoms.
.57 -> And all the time the focus was on symptoms
.241 -> but we are already late in the game
.477 -> being able to see when those pressures are rising
.713 -> we are able to change the management or their medications
.018 -> even if they don't have symptoms.
.453 -> And this way we can monitor them very closely
.625 -> and prevent them coming to the hospital.
.994 -> - And from the patient's perspective this is
.862 -> certainly a lot easier.
.165 -> - As long as they have connection to internet
.167 -> you can monitor them, wherever in the world.
.369 -> They don't have to come so often into
.972 -> physicans offices and hopefully they don't have
.241 -> to come in the hospital.
.077 -> - [Jackie] There certainly are a lot of benefits,
.512 -> why is it such an important innovation in medicine
.948 -> in your opinion?
.181 -> - It's because, although with all the advances,
.452 -> with everything we have right now,
.053 -> we're still struggling with patients,
.055 -> taking care of patients with heart failure.
.458 -> Because it's a very challenging disease.
.326 -> Whatever we can do to help these people live longer
.73 -> and feel better, I think that's going to be a huge
.266 -> progress in taking care of these patients.
.869 -> - [Jackie] Jesus Yases JR agrees that this technology
.438 -> is a big advancement.
.273 -> He says it's given him peace of mind
.075 -> when it comes to his health.
.044 -> (upbeat music)
.879 -> - I feel I'm being watched,
.649 -> I have more confidence.
.418 -> - [Jackie] Jesus first started having
.153 -> heart related symptoms about 10 years ago.
.155 -> - I noticed that I was getting really weak and coughing.
.691 -> And coughing a lot.
.025 -> I would get phlegm in my lungs.
.161 -> - [Jackie] At the encouragement of his family,
.33 -> he sought medical attention.
.965 -> And was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
.2 -> - Wasn't doing too good,
.935 -> my heart was at 15% pumping
.405 -> and was decreasing.
.973 -> - He's been one of those patients that's been struggling
.476 -> in and out of the hospital
.644 -> and he was very short of breath
.647 -> with minimal activities.
.182 -> - I was very emotional,
.017 -> it was really something,
.154 -> I couldn't understand.
.688 -> It's unbelievable that this happened to me.
.058 -> Before I didnt even want to deal I felt like depressed
.994 -> and anxiety kicks in.
.628 -> You don't want to do anything.
.264 -> - [Jackie] In addition to medication and other treatment
.433 -> Jesus' doctors recommended the pillow to help track
.336 -> his progress more closely.
.104 -> - He says I'll get it in the computer,
.472 -> then I'll know what's going on with your blood
.875 -> and your oxygen.
.609 -> I said okay.
.111 -> - [Jackie] Jesus was quickly impressed with how closely
.246 -> his doctors could watch him.
.614 -> Giving him comfort that everything was okay.
.418 -> (upbeat music)
.02 -> - I have more confidence that the doctors
.789 -> actually watching out for me.
.691 -> This pillow has helped me quite a bit mentally,
.694 -> gave me a peace of mind and security
-> knowing that somethings going to get done
.501 -> if something is wrong.
.203 -> And it's not just waiting it's gonna happen
.371 -> right then and there.
.873 -> - [Jackie] Jesus says he thinks this technology
.775 -> is key to giving congestive heart failure patients
.978 -> peace of mind.
.58 -> - All it does is benefit, knowing that something's
.715 -> going to get done if something's wrong.
.084 -> And it's gonna happen right then and there.
.521 -> (upbeat music)
